To give us ideas for our music video visuals, I looked at possible costumes and the props we would need for our characters. As our video consists of two main characters both played by me (the rest of the extra characters will be wearing normal, everyday clothes), I visited some stores to try out various costumes and put together a moodboard of various looks. I also researched some props in order to find out where I could get them and the prices of these purchases.
This idea was influenced by the jacket shown in the moodboard. All outfits were trendy and modern with glamour/performance aspect and I felt the subtle patterns would stand out well in a music video. The moodboard shows further additions such as ripped jeans and gold heeled boots that look trendy and slightly more interesting and this felt appropriate to make the video visually appealing. The black and gold glitter aspects would also stand out well against any neon lights in the video.
The outfit here is similar to the first outfit, again influenced by the patterned jacket. Slightly more dressed up aspects have been included like the glitter crop top, and this has been done to again make the outfit look appropriate for glamour and performance. As these first two outfits are quite similar, a combination of the two would be most appropriate.
This outfit has been hugely influenced by Zara Larsson's outfit in the music video for 'Ain't my Fault' and it's combination of items that may not be worn together normally makes it also quite glamorous and visually interesting. This would also work well with neon lights as the gold glitter would create interesting effects on camera and could be very effective.
Here I have combined aspects of 2017 fashion that are popular with teenagers of today as I felt that would an appropriate image to put on screen as it can inspirational and realistic for a viewer. The colours correspond with the theming of the video and the huge amount of orange, red, and yellow lights and the rose embroidery in the boots reflects the motif of roses in the whole video. This design helped influence the last outfit.
Finally, this outfit for the main character felt most appropriate in all aspects: it's the most dressed up and glamours; it's interesting and fashionable for 2017; it included rose embroidery fitting the motif of the video and Outlex's brand aesthetic; the colours of reds fit the fire and bright scheme of the video. A similar look to this will be used for the performance part of the video.
Parts of these outfits are already owned by us and we can use them for the video. Anything that we do need to buy will go into our budget planning and will probably be gotten either at Primark or online at wholesalers for cheaper prices. In case we have issues getting different parts of costume, we will be looking at anything we or our friend own to make up similar outfits.
For the video, we will need the following props:
- VHS tape (borrowed from school)
- Old TV (borrowed from school)
- Black wings (owned already)
- Sparklers (bought on Amazon)
- Neon Light cables (bought on Amazon)
- Roses (bought from a florist)
- Sticky notes (bought in a stationary shop)
- Party objects like streamers, balloons etc (bought from various shops like Wilkinsons and Poundland)
Finally, I have created a budget for the props and costume items that will be needed in the video:
Here you can see a video where we tried out the GoPro when documenting us buying the props and costumes:
And here is a photo showing all the final purchases as a result of this research:
