Treatment & Feedback

Before beginning to film our music video, we created a treatment which we pitched to our class in video form. To write our treatment, we used an A2 piece of paper to plan all areas of our video:

  • Outline - including song choice and our artist
  • Concept - detailing the full narrative of the video
  • Characters - including actors required
  • Visuals and Style Choice - looking at lighting, colours, costume, make-up, props and influences
  • Target audience - using theory such as Uses and Gratifications by Bluhmer and Katz
  • Location - including possible alternatives
  • Equipment and Resources - including where we would get it all from
  • Contingency Plans - mentions of risks also
  • Detailed Outline - a full look at camera angles, sound, editing techniques, and theory
  • Group Roles - all jobs outlines
  • Summary and Next Steps - checklist of who is doing what parts of the planning process
You can see our treatment plan here:

After pitching our treatment, we collected feedback from our class and also reflected on our video ourselves. Here you can see the comments:

From this we learned that people enjoyed:
  • characters of our choice - using the personification of anxiety in particular
  • storyline and narrative was detailed and well thought out especially the use of inner and outer narrative as well as the enigma code
  • issues addressed in our video concept
  • the variety of locations and their connection to genre and themes
  • use of neon lights for visuals
  • well planned storyboard and story list
In areas that we were suggested to improve, we have considered our next steps:

See if the artists has other music video that you can use to inspire styles and techniques
For this, we have looked at various artists in the electropop genre and their music videos to inspire our style when planning things such as costume and locations.

Use split-screen to show both characters
Part of the second verse in the storyboard contains split-screen and graphic matches to create a visually interesting link between the two versions of Outlex.

Think about prop costs and where to get them
We have created a prop budget and have done some research into the cheapest prices of props and will be acquiring them from the high street.

Get permission to film in your locations
We have emailed or contacted places like the neon lights museum to ask for permission to film. If we do not hear back or are rejected, we will be looking at alternatives.

Be careful around dangerous filming aspects such as burning roses and on the hilltop
We will be keeping safe when filming and making sure there is no danger before beginning takes.

Take care of GoPro when filming water scenes
We will attach a floating device to the GoPro to ensure we don't lose it and make sure we keep it in sight at all times.

Now that we have planned, presented and reflected upon our treatment, we can begin planning our video in more detail before beginning to shoot. This will all be documented on the next posts on this blog.
